CALYPSO -- Turnovers and missed scoring opportunities plagued coach John Avent's North Duplin team as Chocowinity Southside put three different rushers over the 100-yard mark, rolling to a 34-2 victory Friday at Grubbs Field.

North Duplin failed to get anything going offensively all night, producing only 132 yards of total offense.

Down 14-0 late in the second quarter, the Rebels drove to the Southside one-yard line on the strength of a running attack led by senior tailback Brian Boykin. This was to be the closest North Duplin would get to paydirt, however, as a delay of game penalty preceded three consecutive failed attempts at the end zone, putting the ball back in Southside's hands.

The Rebels' defense had equal trouble in keeping up with the multi-faceted Southside running attack. Javores King, Brian Haywood and Lion-O Bensten combined to run for 333 yards for the Seahawks, all three finding the end-zone at least once.

Avent feels that his club has a lot to work on before heading to Topsail next week.

"We're going to work on everything," he said. "We've got to get in better shape offensively and defensively. Southside is a fast team, we have to get to the ball quicker on defense."

Avent said his team was its own worst enemy at crucial times as well. noting that the Rebels had to correct turnovers and penalty problems.

North Duplin looked to make one final run late in the game as linebacker Sherman Hyatt intercepted a pass in Seahawk territory early in the third quarter. Hope soon faded, however, as North Duplin ran the ball three consecutive times for loss, followed by an incomplete pass. Southside took over on downs and continued to pound away on the ground for the rest of the game.

Rebel quarterback Brad Lloyd ran for 57 yards, but failed to complete a pass on four attempts. Southside was equally unsuccessful in the air, attempting only three passes the entire night and completing none.

North Duplin looks to improve on their opening performance at Topsail next week.
