Eagles shades North Lenoir in tiebreak-filled victory

Kayce Brantham and Leah Smith each prevailed in a third-set tiebreaker as Rosewood knocked off North Lenoir 5-3 in a Classes 1-A/2-A Carolina/Eastern Plains Conference match Tuesday afternoon.

Brantham, the No. 1 seed, stumbled in the opening set against Morgan Worthington. But Brantham rebounded for a 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 win. Meanwhile, Smith suffered the same scenario at No. 2 before handing Mary-Linton Smith a 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 setback.

"Big wins for us," said Eagles coach Bert Perkins.

Sidney Worrell and Kourtney Humphrey each triumphed at Nos. 3 and 4 singles, respectively.

Smith-Humphrey secured the match with an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles.

Rosewood (3-1, 2-1 C/EPC) travels to Tarboro on Thursday.

North Lenoir (1-3, 0-2) is the guest of North Pitt the same afternoon.

Tigers a defeat

WARSAW -- Beth Parrish claimed the lone singles win as James Kenan dropped an 8-1, non-conference match to East Duplin on Tuesday afternoon.

Parrish, the No. 4 seed, stopped Amy Bostick 6-4, 7-5.

The Panthers, of the East Central 2-A Conference, picked up five singles wins. The visitors swept the doubles and lost just six games.

James Kenan (1-1) travels to Richlands next Tuesday afternoon.

Rams cruise

past SW Edgecombe

PINETOPS -- Reigning Eastern Plains Conference champion Greene Central swept the singles and doubles in a 9-0 victory against SouthWest Edgecombe on Tuesday afternoon.

The Rams remained unbeaten in five outings while the rebuilding Cougars slipped to 0-5 overall. Greene Central picked up its 101st consecutive victory against EPC opposition, a win streak that started in 1993.

"We played a little tired today after our long road to Fayetteville Terry Sanford the day before, but we certainly were more intense than we were in our conference matches last week," Greene Central coach Donald Clark said. "SouthWest has a young team this year, but I was impressed with how hard they played against us the entire match.

"Tom Wooten is one of the top coaches in our conference, and he always fields a competitive team."

Ashley Harrell, the No. 4 seed, lost just one game en route her fifth victory of the season. Christi Murphy climbed to 5-0 with a shutout against fifth-seeded Johanna Alvarez.

"Christi was sharp for us today," Clark said. "She moved well up and back, and did an excellent job of putting away short balls.

"Carly Hart and Michelle Jernigan played very well for us today at number three doubles. They made very few mistakes and put the ball away at the net."

Hart-Jernigan blanked Alvarez-Megan Brown 8-0.

Greene Central travels to Raleigh Broughton this afternoon.

WILSON -- Charles B. Aycock evened its worksheet at 1-1 with an 8-1 rout of traditional independent schools power Greenfield School on Tuesday afternoon.

"(We) played very well ... a great effort from all the girls," Golden Falcons coach Kelly Matthews said.

Katie Perry, Kristen Prosser, Emilee Quinn, Kristen Bennett and Kara Kelly each claimed a singles win. Perry-Prosser, Quinn-Lizzie Sodoma and Mallory Strickland-Mallory Peacock each prevailed in doubles.
