Chargers get new coach's first win, tops Flora McDonald

Wayne Country Day presented first-year coach Juliet Pinder Jones with her first-ever victory -- a 25-18, 25-16, 25-17 victory against Flora MacDonald Academy on Thursday afternoon.

Amanda Benton provided nine kills and two blocks in the straight-set win. Laura Ziemer added six service aces and four kills, while Heather Daughtery contributed four aces, two kills and one block.

Amanda Knutson collected four kills. Caroline Lewis had three aces and one kill, while Stephanie Knutson chipped in two aces and three digs.

"They played very well together," said Jones, a former standout at Mount Olive College. "I thought they did a tremendous job for their first game."

Wayne Country Day (1-0) is the guest of Rosewood next Monday afternoon.

Panthers

defend tournament title

KENLY -- North Johnston successfully defended its Johnston County Tournament title with a come-from-behind victory against Smithfield-Selma on Thursday afternoon.

The Panthers, unbeaten in three matches, handed the Spartans a 25-27, 25-12, 25-19, 25-18 loss.

Junior middle hitter Hannah Ellis earned Most Valuable Player honors for the three-day tournament. Teammates Candice Renfrow, Kelly Smith and Robin Creech each earned a spot on the all-tournament team.

Clayton finished third, followed by Princeton, West Johnston and South Johnston.

Rosewood

remains unbeaten

NEWTON GROVE -- Morgan Wheeler turned in a seven-kill, four-dig performance as unbeaten Rosewood hammered Hobbton 25-12, 25-13, 25-16 in a non-conference match Thursday afternoon.

Wheeler added a service ace and nine points on serve for the Eagles, who haven't lost in two outings thus far. They continue play at home next Monday against Wayne Country Day.

Jessica Hill recorded nine kills, four blocks, two digs and one ace.

Katy Morris, Kelly Gurley, Brooke Goff, Stephanie Rhodes, Kasey Gray and Clare Narron combined for 13 kills.

Hannah Aycock dished out six assists.

"Great team play," Eagles coach Jennifer Cochran said.

Hawks

cruise past Vikings

LAGRANGE -- Senior middle hitter Randi Moulton collected eight kills and one block as North Lenoir dismantled Kinston 25-8, 25-8, 25-8 in a non-conference match Thursday at Wooten Gymnasium.

The Hawks improved to 3-0 overall.

Brittany Sanders provided five kills and one service ace, while Shannon Plymouth contributed eight kills.

Chanee Lynch served three aces.

North Lenoir entertains North Duplin next Monday afternoon.

Wilson Hunt

sweeps Southern Wayne

DUDLEY -- Charlie Garten turned in a solid defensive game with seven digs, but Southern Wayne couldn't find the right rhythm in a 25-18, 25-16, 25-23 non-conference loss against Wilson Hunt.

Garten added one service and one kill.

Scarlett Joyner chipped in with five kills and four digs.

"We just have not gotten comfortable with the new offense that we've been working on this year and our floor communication is suffering because of it," second-year Saints coach Brian Bandy said. "I hope that we can learn to get back to fundamental volleyball soon or it's going to be a very long season.

"We will get our share of wins this year, but how many and how often is the question that we just don't have an answer for right now."

Hunt departed 1-1.

Southern Wayne entertais Kinston next Tuesday in the Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference opener for both teams.

Tigers claw out first win

WARSAW -- James Kenan picked up its first win of the season Thursday, sweeping Jones Senior 25-10, 25-12, 25-5 in a match at Harmon Gymnasium.

Kenan benefited from good serving, with Caroline Moore contributing nine points off her serve and Crystal Evans with eight points off her serve. Team captain Alicia Tabor had a solid all-around game for the Tigers (1-1).

Coach Regina Myers said the team had good on-court communication throughout the entire match.

Spring Creek

drops heartbreaking match

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Midway rallied for two wins in the final three games and handed Spring Creek a 25-18, 23-25, 25-15, 8-25, 15-11 loss in non-conference action Thursday afternoon.

Lorenda Brogden led the Gators with 10 kills, three blocks and one service ace.

Margo Sauter provided seven kills and one ace, while Tomeka Pride registered two kills and one ace. Courtney Oxendine added two kills and one dig.

Spring Creek (1-1) is the guest of Southern Wayne next Wednesday afternoon.

Brooke Boggins emerged the leading server with four aces.

Mallory Albertson finished as the assist leader.

Lakewood's

net game bothers Rebels

ROSEBORO -- Lakewood dominated play at the net and escaped North Duplin 25-23, 25-21, 25-23 in a non-conference match Thursday afternoon.

The Rebels fell to 1-1 overall.

"Lakewood's got an awesome next game and they took advantage of our errors to open doors for themselves," North Duplin coach Heather Best said. "We fought hard and never quit. I was proud of our play with the exception of our serves, which ultimately hurt us in the end."

Bethany Malcolm paced the Rebels with six services aces, one kill, one block and four digs. Sierra Ward contributed four kills, three blocks and three digs.

Emily Deibert chipped in four kills, four aces and four digs.

North Duplin plays host to Hobbton next Tuesday afternoon.

Fulghum, Phillips

serve perfect for NL

LAGRANGE -- Brynne Fulghum and Lyndsey Phillips didn't commit a serving error as North Lenoir cruised past Kinston 25-11, 25-14 at Wooten Gymnasium.

The Hawks scored 19 points with Fulghum on serve and six with Phillips at the line.

North Lenoir (2-1) plays host to East Duplin next Monday.

rude guests to Saints

DUDLEY -- Visiting Wilson Hunt survived Southern Wayne's scrappy play in the opening game and cruised to a 25-20, 25-8 victory Thursday afternoon.

The Saints scored 10 consecutive points with Katie Connelley on serve.

Southern Wayne welcomes Kinston next Tuesday afternoon.

NEWTON GROVE -- Courtney Hill collected two kills, while teammates Chandra Meadows and Ashley Williams each contributed one in a 25-10, 25-12 non-conference victory agaist Hobbton.

Hill also had a block and two digs for the Eagles.

Aubrey Reinhard, Jamie Bold, Ashley Shaw and Roxie Phillips combined for four assists. Williams and Meadows each served an ace.

Rosewood (2-0) faces Wayne Country Day next Monday at 4:30 p.m.

James Kenan

dumps Jones Senior

WARSAW -- James Kenan had little trouble sweeping Jones Senior 25-14, 25-8 on Thursday afternoon at Harmon Gym.

Hannah Adams picked up 12 points in one game under her serve, while Ashanti Stroud had excellent sets, spikes and digs for the Tigers.

James Kenan will play Heide Trask on Monday on the road.

Leopards rally

in three

ROSEBORO -- Visiting North Duplin blistered Lakewood 25-9 in the opening set, but the Leopards rebounded with scores of 27-25 and 25-21 to claim the non-conference match.

Vanessa Lynch led the Rebels with six service aces, while Danielle Keel provided two.

Kayla Myers added four kills and four digs. Heather Hudson collected two kills, two aces and three digs.

North Duplin (1-1) entertains Hobbton next Tuesday afternoon.

climbs to 2-0

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Spring Creek charged past Midway 26-24, 26-24 in a non-conference match Thursday afternoon.

The Gators (2-0) travel to Southern Wayne next Wednesday.
