The Goldsboro Builders/Clarence Rose Junior Golf Classic heads into its second and final round today at Walnut Creek Country Club.
Unlike previous years, almost every age division of this year's event is highly competitive.
Blake Williams of Elon leads the boys 16-18-year-old division by two strokes after posting a two-under 70 on Monday. Williams plans to try and walk on at Campbell University next year, and if he wins today it will mark his third consecutive tournament victory on the Carolinas Golf Association's junior schedule.
Coming off of back-to-back wins, he is confident heading into the final round.
"I'm trying to go 67 or 68, to break out a low number," he said. " It's a nice golf course; if I can stay around par, I'll be alright."
Also near the top of the leaderboard are Miles Perry, a rising junior at Eastern Wayne High School, and Jonathan Greene, a rising senior at Wayne Christian. They posted scores of 76 and 77, respectively.
In the girls 16-18-year-old division, Ivy Witherington (97) of Greenville leads by one over Kristin Freeman (98). Freeman is a recent graduate of Eastern Wayne High School and will play for Mount Olive College next year.
Colby Murphy, a rising sophomore at Greene Central High School, is tied for the lead in the boys 14-15-year-old division with Adam Stephenson of Greenville. Both shot 72 on Monday. Clark Rose, a rising sophomore at Wayne Christian, is five shots back after a first round 77. James Ellis fired a 71 to lead the boys 12-13 division by two shots.
In the girls 14-15 group, Christin Harrison (94) of Wilson leads Kelli Forbis (95) of Pikeville by one going into the final round.
The 10-11 and 8-9 divisions, both of which play nine holes each day, were just as competitive.
Andrew Decker shot a 38 to lead by one stroke over Reid Wooten in the boys 10-11 division. Cody McGowan leads the boys 8-9-year-old group by thee shots after carding an impressive first round score of 35. Mallory Warrick leads the girls 10-11 division following a first round 45.
This is the tournament's sixth consecutive year, and though the number of players is slightly down from last year, sponsor Clarence Rose feels that the level of play is especially strong.
"I think that the strength of the field is good," Rose said, "especially with the addition of some of these ranked players that we have this year."
Play will conclude this afternoon at Walnut Creek, with an awards presentation for each age division as they finish.
