WILSON -- Charles B. Aycock's Tara Fenton scored the game-winning penalty kick to push the Golden Falcons past Wilson Beddingfield 2-1 in the first round of the Wilson Daily Times Soccer Cup on Tuesday at Wilson Hunt's field.

The two teams played to a 1-1 tie at the end of regulation as the tournament format sent the two teams into penalty kicks to break the draw.

Aycock goalie Emily Stewart saved one kick, while one Warrior shot went wide of the goal. Fenton, who also turned in a solid defensive effort, then stepped up to seal the win.

"I never thought it would get to that point, but I don't think I would rather have anyone else up there taking the kick with the game on the line," Aycock coach John Fiddler said of Fenton.

Nicole Taylor scored Aycock's lone goal in regulation at the 35 minute mark of the first half.

Hunt tied the game near the 35 minute mark of the second half.

Fiddler applauded the effort of Stewart in the goal.

"She (Stewart) had a real strong game in the net. They had eight or nine corners, and she had a couple of point-blank saves."

Stephanie Speck, Lizzie Sodoma and Christie Milleson also scored on penalty kicks in overtime.

Aycock now moves on to face Wilson Beddingfield in the tournament semifinals at Wilson Fike tonight at 7 p.m.

WILSON -- Cameron Liner tallied a pair of goals in a six-minute stretch as Wilson Beddingfield defeated North Johnston 3-1 in the opening round of the Wilson Daily Times Soccer Cup on Tuesday evening.

Liner scored in the 32nd and 38th minutes for the Bruins, who led 2-0 at halftime.

Barbara Durant notched Beddingfield's third goal, collecting a rebound shot that deflected off the post and North Johnston's keeper. Senior forward Kendall Liner took the initial shot.

The Panthers avoided the shutout in the 59th minute. Heather Creech, a junior midfielder, converted a penalty kick.

North Johnston faces Wilson Hunt in the consolation semifinals today at Wilson Hunt. Beddingfield advanced to play Charles B. Aycock, which knocked off Wilson Hunt 2-1 on penalty kicks.
