PIKEVILLE — Charles B. Aycock’s Christie Milleson scored the lone goal for the Golden Falcons as the defense proved solid in a 1-0 win over Rosewood at Aycock’s field on Wednesday.

Milleson’s goal came on a long cross from Lizzie Sodoma. Stephanie Speck was credited with the assist.

The Falcons’ Emily Stewart had 10 saves in the shutout win as Aycock evened its record at 1-1.

“The defense had a lot to do with it. She didn’t face a lot of real tough shots,” Aycock coach John Fiddler said.

Fiddler credited defender Rebecca Phillips for her ability to mark the Lady Eagles’ sophomore forward Erin Thibodeau and the rest of a usually-potent Rosewood offense.

“They are fast and very explosive and we marked up with Erin with Rebecca and did a real good job of keeping her out of the game,” Fiddler said. “The rest of the defense, Tara fenton, Angela Cecil, Rachel Coggins and Paige Stewart did a good job of shutting the rest down.”

Mary Beth Hooks was applauded for a solid effort for Aycock in the midfield.

The Falcons open up the Wilson Daily Times Cup on Tuesday against Wilson Hunt on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Warriors’ field.

blanks North Johnston

WARSAW — James Kenan’s Sarah Heath scored in the 67th minute as the Tigers, despite being outshot, defeated North Johnston 1-0 at home on Wednesday.

The Lady Panthers outshot the James Kenan 11-2 on the game and missed a penalty kick in each half.

Allison Hinnant had one save for North Johnston, while Candace Helton had five saves for the Tigers (1-1).

“I was pleased that we thoroughly controlled every facet of the game, but we just didn’t put the ball in the net,” North Johnston coach Brent Walston said.

The Panthers travel to SouthWest Edgecombe today.
