WARSAW -- James Kenan weathered a third-period blitz by Jones Senior and pulled out a turnover-plagued 41-37 victory in the first round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association sectional playoffs Monday night in John P. Harmon Gym.

The visiting Lady Trojans (7-11) outscored Kenan (16-9) by 18-5 in the third behind full-court pressure defense to go up 32-29. That rally included a 16-0 run.

But Kenan got five points from Sareece Armwood early in the fourth and finally took the lead 38-37 with 1:44 left on two foul shots by reserve Lashondal Smith -- her only points in the game.

Jones Senior faltered when its press wilted and their last seven free throws missed. They scored a single point in the final 5:44.

James Kenan, coming off a deflating 54-50 loss to Midway in the Super Six Conference tournament final Friday, roared to an 11-2 lead in the first four minutes with five points from wing Crystal Evans and four from Armwood.

The Lady Tigers finished with 40 turnovers, Jones Senior 28.

Armwood led Kenan with 15 points, 12 rebounds, three blocks and three steals. Evans scored 13.

Jones Senior of the Coastal Plains Conference got 14 points from point guard Whitney Ward and 13 from forward Ashley Dudley.

James Kenan moves on to play Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Farmville Central, the top seed from the Carolina 1-A Conference.
