MOC men win 11th straight

MOUNT OLIVE -- Victor Young's alley-oop reverse slam dunk sparked a 16-2 run and Maurice Horton capped the run with six consecutive free throws late in the second half as host Mount Olive rallied from a 12-point deficit to defeat Anderson 65-62 in Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference men's basketball Friday at College Hall. The win was the 11th in a row for Mount Olive, adding to the Trojans' school-record winning streak.

Mount Olive (14-2 overall, 7-1 CVAC) fell behind 11-0 before Marcus West's layup with 14:36 left in the half gave the Trojans their first points. Anderson (7-8, 3-5) kept the lead in double digits throughout most of the first half as Travis Tate scored 10 of his 12 points before intermission. Mount Olive cut the lead to three on Young's three-pointer with 5:47 remaining before Anderson pulled away to take a 33-26 lead at halftime.

Mount Olive trailed 51-40 when Brad McDougald lobbed a pass to Young, who caught the pass with his back to the basket and hit a two-handed reverse slam dunk to ignite the Trojans.

Mount Olive trailed 53-50 when Horton took over at the free throw line. Horton cut the lead to one with a pair of free throws with 4:11 remaining, then hit two more free throws to give Mount Olive its first lead of the game at 54-53 with 3:03 remaining.

Mount Olive built the lead to seven with 19 seconds remaining, but Anderson pulled with 63-62 with nine seconds left after Chris Poore and J.R. Howell hit three-pointers in a span of three seconds. Janson Greene hit a pair of free throws with eight seconds remaining and Anderson missed its final three-point attempt.

Young led Mount Olive with 13 points, while West added 12. Horton scored all of his six points from the line. Zimmerman led all scorers with 14 points.

Stephanie Ponds' layup with 27 seconds left in overtime broke a 90-90 tie and Anderson held on to defeat host Mount Olive 95-92 in overtime in Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference women's basketball Friday at College Hall. Eleven players reached double figures in the game, five for Mount Olive and six for Anderson.

Mount Olive (7-9 overall, 3-6 CVAC) jumped out to a 7-0 lead and led by as many as 11 points in the first half as the Trojans went into the locker room with a 50-39 halftime lead.

Latoria Harvey and Brandy Smith combined for half of Mount Olive's 50 points in the first half. Lashonda Chiles led Anderson with 14 points in the first half, all coming in the first seven minutes.

Anderson (12-3, 7-1) equaled its entire first-half rebound total in the first six minutes of the second half as they pulled within 56-55.

Harvey's basket with 40 seconds left gave Mount Olive an 81-79 lead, but Langston tied the game at 81-81 with 27 seconds remaining to force overtime.

Tanika Hudgins broke the tie with a pair of free throws with 3:42 left in overtime, but Ponds' putback on a missed free throw gave Anderson an 84-83 lead. Mount Olive led 88-87 after a free throw by Teneal Boone, but Anderson took a 90-88 lead on Shemika Reed's three-point play with 1:05 remaining.

Ponds put Anderson ahead to stay, getting herself free under the basket for the go-ahead points. After Leann Segers hit 1-of-2 free throws to make it a three-point game, Smith hit a five-foot baseline jumper to pull Mount Olive within 93-92. Decole Shoemate hit a pair of free throws for Anderson, giving Mount Olive one final chance, but Smithâ??s three-point attempt was just off the mark.

Harvey led all scorers with 23 points, while Smith added a career-high 20 points for Mount Olive.

Ladora Charles finished with 16 points, nine steals and seven assists, while Hudgins added 15 points and Boone tallied 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Lashonda Chiles led Anderson with 20 points.

Mount Olive returns to action Monday as the Trojans play host to Barton in CVAC action. Tip-off is 5:30 p.m. at College Hall.
