RAY MAYES GALLOWAY

Ray Mayes Galloway, born Nov. 27, 1929, died July 15, 2018, at Lower Cape Fear Hospice in Wilmington, N.C.
He was born in Winter Haven, Fla., and grew up in Charlotte, N.C.
He and his wife, Lillian McNeil Galloway, were married more than 67 years.
Mr. Galloway graduated from high school in Sumter, S.C., and from Duke University.
He served as a naval officer in World War II, and was recalled for the Korean conflict, with sea duty in the Pacific during his first tour of duty and Korean waters during his second tour.
He was a retired business man, having been vice president of an insurance company in Raleigh before moving to Goldsboro in 1965 and becoming a partner in O’Berry and Lewis Inc.
He was an active member of First Presbyterian Church in Goldsboro, also having served as an elder. He taught Sunday school for many years.
He also served as a commissioner to Presbytery, the Synod and General Assembly of the Presbyterian denomination. He served on committees at each level of church government.
Mr. Galloway and his wife, Lillian, worked as volunteers in Kenya, Zambia, Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh and Indonesia.
He served many years as board member of the Medical Benevolence Foundation. He also shipped millions of dollars worth of donated medical equipment and supplies to overseas mission hospitals in 13 countries.
He served as a board member and past president of United Way of Wayne County, Arts Council of Wayne County, Goldsboro Kiwanis Club and Eastern North Carolina Chapter of Charted Property and Casualty Underwriters.
He also served as a board member of Wayne County Chamber of Commerce, and was a member of Golden K Kiwanis Club.
He was an avid pilot, and had a commercial pilot’s license and instructor’s license for airplanes and gliders.
He was North Carolina state governor of Soaring Society of America for eight years.
He competed in regional soaring contests in various states east of the Mississippi River and in Texas, winning several. He competed in national soaring contests in the United States and Canada.
He held numerous state records, and was an active member of the North Carolina Soaring Association.
Mr Galloway was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond Coulter Galloway and Helen Mayes Galloway, and sister, Maetta (Mickey) Galloway Cox.
Surviving are his wife, Lillian McNeil Galloway; daughters Margaret "Midge" Hayes Galloway, Melissa Galloway Hinds and husband, Carl Edward Hinds; granddaughters Hayes Coulter Holloman and Grae Holloman Harris and husband, John Michael Harris; great-granddaughter, Olivia Leigh Puckett; and great-grandson, Gavin Michael Harris.
Funeral will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, Goldsboro.
The family will receive friends following the service in McChesney Hall at First Presbyterian Church.

The family would like thank the entire staff at Azalea Healthcare and Lower Cape Fear Hospice in Wilmington, for the care and consideration they showed Mr. Galloway and his family.
