MAHALA E. WALTERS
Feb. 28, 1921-June 17, 2018
Mahala Barnes Edwards Walters, LaGrange, died June 17, 2018, at Oaks at Whitaker- Mayview in Raleigh.
Mahala was born Feb. 28, 1921, in Goldsboro to the late James Thompson Edwards and Lilly Belle Sutton.
She and her late husband, John Parrott Walters Jr., founded Walters Insurance Agency in LaGrange in 1948. They continued the family business until 1983, upon his death.
She was a member of LaGrange Methodist Church much of her life. However, she was baptized in St Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Goldsboro, she attended the Church of the Good Shepherd in Raleigh as a child,and in her later life, she became a member of Holy Innocents Episcopal Church in Moss Hill.
Mahala was blessed with a nurturing and selfless nature and many other fine traits. Among them was her athletic prowess, which she has passed down especially to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a sports enthusiast all her life; an avid golfer and very astute bridge player.
Mahala is survived by one son, John Parrott Walters III and his wife, Catherine, of Swansboro; one daughter, Sara Frances Borden and her husband, Tom, of Raleigh; her grandchildren, Caroline Pisani Bell and husband, Thomas of Raleigh, James Christian Walters and wife, Megan, of LaGrange and George Purvis Walters and wife, Anna, of Raleigh; and her great-grandchildren, Sara Elizabeth Bell and Mahala Kathleen Bell.
Mahala was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her brother, Nathan Sutton Edwards; and her sister, Sarah Thompson Edwards Mewborn.
A celebration of life service will be held at Holy Innocents Episcopal Church, 6861 N.C. 55 West, Seven Springs, N.C., Sunday, July 15, at 2 p.m.
A reception will follow at the home of Chris and Megan Walters at 114 Institute Road in LaGrange after the service for those wishing to visit with the family.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Holy Innocents Episcopal Church.
Arrangements are entrusted to Rouse Funeral Home of LaGrange.
