Mrs. Sylvia Cunningham Nethercutt, 76, Snow Hill, passed away Friday evening, Jan. 19, 2018. A native of Greene County, she was born Oct. 19, 1941, the daughter of Roland and Nellie Pate Cunningham.

Following graduation from high school, Sylvia attended the Lenoir Memorial School of Nursing, graduating in 1962 and becoming a registered nurse; in 1975, she graduated from East Carolina University where she earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Following 13 years of clinical nursing at Cherry Hospital, she joined the Wayne County Schools where she taught health occupations (HOSA) for 16 years. In 1986, she was named the HOSA advisor of the year for North Carolina and was awarded the Order of the Long Leaf Pine in 1987, in recognition of her contributions to HOSA and the students it served. Sylvia completed her teaching career by returning to the Greene County Schools and initiating the HOSA program at Greene Central High School. While accomplishing much professionally as a nurse and educator, her first love was her family and she cherished being a wife, mother, and grandmother. Sylvia was a member of Brooks Frizzelle Memorial United Methodist Church where she worshiped for many years and served on various church committees and boards.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a stepgrandson, David Jennings Dawson III; and siblings, Roland Cunningham Jr., Mack P. Cunningham, Dixie C. Braxton and Jerry A. Cunningham Sr.

Her surviving family includes her husband, Robert Lynn "Bob" Nethercutt; daughter, Carla Nethercutt Dawson and husband, David, of LaGrange; grandson, Robert David "Rob" Dawson of LaGrange; sisters, Annalean C. Reeves and husband, Edward Earl, of Goldsboro and Janice Cunningham Raper and husband, Wayne, of Snow Hill; brother, Joe Cunningham and wife, Ann, of Goldsboro; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service to remember and celebrate Sylvia's life will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 23, at Brooks Frizzelle Memorial United Methodist Church. Committal services will be held privately at the Snow Hill Cemetery at a later time.

The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the church fellowship hall and other times at the Nethercutt residence.
