Bobby Gene Whitaker, 81, died Wednesday morning at Wayne UNC Healthcare.

Born in Martin County, he was the son of the late Namon and Martha "Bell" Whitaker, and was the husband of Oma Cannon Whitaker.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home. Burial will follow with full military honors in Wayne Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Bobby retired after 20 years of service with the United States Air Force, and worked with Wayne Community College for 20 years until his retirement.

He enjoyed doing community service work with the Golden Agers, and had participated in the Wayne County Senior Games.

He was a member of Trinity Missionary Baptist Church.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Robert Eugene and Jayme Whitaker of Goldsboro; two daughters and sons-in-law, Eva W. and John Lee of Naples, Fla., and Janice W. and Kenneth Graves of New Braunfels, Texas; a brother, Pete Whitaker of Ahoskie, N.C.; a sister, Ruby Whitaker of Williamston, N.C.; and nine grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Cure for the Colors, 203 Cox Blvd., Goldsboro, N.C., 27534, or Trinity Missionary Baptist Church, 1086 N.C. 111, Goldsboro, N.C., 27534.
