C. ALLEN SUMMERLIN III

July 23, 1947-Dec. 14, 2016

Allen Summerlin, 69, died Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2016, at FirstHealth Hospice House in Pinehurst.

Allen was born in Goldsboro July 23, 1947, to the late Charles Allen Summerlin Jr. and Betty Burns Summerlin.

He graduated from Goldsboro High School and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Allen was married to his high school sweetheart, Pamela Mixon Summerlin.

Prior to finishing school in Chapel Hill, Allen enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, and served for two years overseas, returning to North Carolina.

Allen and Pam married in 1970.

Upon graduation, Allen and Pam moved to Greensboro, where he worked for Haskins and Sells as an auditor.

In the mid-1970s, they returned to Goldsboro, where he joined First Federal Savings and Loan.

Years later, Allen and Pam moved to Kinston, where he became the president of First Financial Savings Bank. He successfully guided the bank through the real estate crisis of the late 1980s, eventually negotiating a sale of the bank to BB&T.

After a brief time as president of Stackhouse Inc., Allen joined his longtime friend Tom Howell, a fellow CPA, at Howell, Summerlin and Co.

Later, both he and Tom joined Goldsboro Milling Co., where they both remained.

Allen is survived by Pam, his wife of 47 years; his daughter, Shelley of Raleigh, N.C.; his son, Danny and daughter-in-law, Missy, of Raleigh, N.C.; his grandchildren, Charles, Sallie and Smith; his sister, Betsy, and brother-in-law, Mike Harrold, of Goldsboro, N.C.; and their children, Doug Daughtry and Mary Charles Jacobs and families; his brother, Page, and sister-in-law, Barbara, of Grantsboro, N.C.; and their children, Ben, Jill and Jennifer and families; Pam's sister, Debby Edgerton of Raleigh, and her children, Todd, Jennifer and Jay and families; and beloved cousins, scattered across the United States.

Allen was particularly fond of his family, Friday afternoon fivesomes at Walnut Creek Country Club, his card group, cold wintery days in Pinehurst and fellow members of First Presbyterian Church.

On behalf of Allen, we would like to give a special thanks to all the friends, nurses, physicians and caregivers who helped make this last month very special and comfortable.

In lieu of flowers, we ask that memorials be made to the UNC Memory Disorders Program, c/o Dan Kaufer, MD, Department of Neurology, 170 Manning Drive, C.B. 7025, Chapel Hill, N.C., 27599.
