ED BEST

May 22, 1927-Dec. 12, 2016

James Edwin "Ed" Best, 89, Goldsboro, went to be with his Lord Monday, Dec. 12, 2016, at Wayne UNC Healthcare.

Ed was born in Wayne County May 22, 1927, to the late Leinster Franklin Best and Annie P. Jackson Best.

He had worked for many years as a carpenter.

Ed proudly served his country in the United States Army, and had been a member of Clingman Street Church of God.

Ed was a true sportsman, most comfortable outdoors, on the water or in the woods. He was a hunter of big and small game, and loved walking in the woods and fields.

Ed loved motorcycles, woodworking, wildlife, birds, watching the history channel, reading his Bible and searching for arrowheads, but most of all, his family.

He was known for his ability to repair virtually anything, cleaning guns and sharpening knives for anyone. He was incredibly smart, and found it perplexing when folks would go around their elbow to get it done.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2016, at the Eastern Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Goldsboro, with the Rev. Thomas D. McLendon officiating.

The family will greet friends following the service at the family residence.

He is survived by his wife of almost 60 years, Parma Lee Best; daughters, Julie Carol Swift and husband, Paul, of Goldsboro and Vickie Ann Deans and husband, Elvis, of Goldsboro; grandchildren, Christopher Hefner of Morganton, Eric Crumpler and wife, Kristi, of Dudley, Amber Hancock of Sevierville, Tenn., Alexander Jackson of Asheville, Earl Deans of Garner and Brandon Deans of Wilmington; and great-grandchildren, MacKenzie Whitley Crumpler, Brooke Crumpler and Aaron Crumpler.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant granddaughter.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the American Heart Association, 3219 Landmark St., Greenville, N.C., 27834.

Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.seymourfuneralhome.com.
