SARAH J. HOWELL

Sarah Johnson Howell, 89, passed away Monday evening at Kitty Askins Hospice Center.

A native of Wayne County, she was the daughter of the late B.B. Montague and the late Myra Montague Hunt, and was married to the late Jarvis B. Howell Jr.

At the time of her death, she was the oldest member of First Baptist Church.

Mrs. Howell was a graduate of Goldsboro High School, attended Salem College in Winston-Salem and graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she was a member of Alpha Delta Pi Sorority.

A member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, she was also a member of Evergreen Garden Club.

She enjoyed researching the genealogy for her family.

A graveside service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Wayne Memorial Park, with Dr. Glenn Phillips officiating.

The family will receive friends following the services.

She is survived by two daughters, Sarah Johnson Wiggs of Goldsboro and Carol Johnson Coltrane and husband, Glenn, of Goldsboro; two stepdaughters, Debby Birchfield and husband, John, of Asheville and Tracy Benton and husband, Dale, of Goldsboro; four grandchildren, Ashley W. Sutton and husband, Kevin, of Wilmington, Jamie W. Haddock and husband, Joe, of Grifton, Joshua Coltrane and wife, Colleen, of New Bern and Bryan Coltrane of Minneapolis, Minn.; two stepgrandchildren, Amanda Martin and husband, Kevin, of Goldsboro and Johnathon Benton and wife, Viviana, of Goldsboro; and six great-grandchildren, Madison Joanne Sutton, Peyton Haddock, Trent Haddock, Amelia Coltrane, Maisie Martin and Josiah Benton.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Joseph B. Johnson; two brothers, Irvin Montague and wife, Jane, and Harold Montague and wife, Anne; a sister, Myra Joan Montague; and a son, Breece Montague Johnson.
