Lynette Hooks Walters, 85, Fuquay-Varina, died Monday, Oct. 17, 2016.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 21, 2016, at the Fuquay-Varina Baptist Church, 301 N. Woodrow St., Fuquay-Varina, N.C. Interment will be immediately following at Wake Chapel Memorial Gardens, 905 Wake Chapel Road, Fuquay-Varina, N.C.

Lynette was born in Fremont, N.C., the daughter of Elijah Lee Hooks and Elizabeth Agatha Hooks.

She attended Radford College in Virginia, and graduated with a major in business administration from Meredith College in Raleigh, N.C.

In her professional career, she held business and accounting jobs in Norfolk, Clinton and Fuquay-Varina.

Upon moving to Fuquay-Varina, she was instrumental in starting the Fuquay-Varina Junior Women's Club in 1963, and served as the first president.

In the Fuquay-Varina Women's Club, she served as vice president, recording secretary, treasurer and president (1990 to 1993). She was named Club Woman of the Year twice.

She served two terms as District 8 treasurer. Lynette received the District 8 Woman of the Year Award and the coveted Minnie Lou Creech Award. Lynette was dedicated to serving her community through the women's club.

Strong in her Christian faith and a longtime member of Fuquay-Varina Baptist Church, Lynette's dedication to, and love for, her family and her friends was her greatest passion.

She was a lifelong learner, avid bridge player, expert seamstress and needleworker, voracious reader, the proudest dance mom and horse show mom, antiquer and, in recent years, a master sudoku and word jumble player.

She was always a lesson in leadership and kindness.

Her daughters will be forever grateful to Marilyn Cobb for her love, kindness and steady hand of caring and friendship for many years, to the care team from CenterPeace Home Health for its compassion, conversations and nurturing support and to the nursing team at Transitions HospiceCare.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of 45 years, Lacy W. Walters.

She is survived by two daughters, Elizabeth Lynette "Betty Lyn" Walters Eller of Fuquay-Varina and Jo Carol Walters Avent and her husband, Andrew Avent; granddaughter, Lacy Ann Avent of Mount Holly, N.C.; and brother, Michael Lee Hooks and his wife, Libby, of Goldsboro, N.C.

Also surviving are a nephew and 10 nieces.

Visitation will be held Thursday, Oct. 20, 2016, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Thomas Funeral Home, 401 N. Ennis St., Fuquay-Varina, N.C.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Transitions HospiceCare, 250 Hospice Circle, Raleigh, N.C., 27607, or Military Missions in Action, 411 N. Judd Parkway N.E., Fuquay-Varina, N.C., 27526.
