REV. HERBERT S. DAVIS

It was Friday, May 20, 2016, in the late morning hours, just before noon, that the Lord sent his angels down to claim one of his chosen vessels, the Rev. Herbert S. Davis. Mr. Davis, 95, was a Mount Olive resident.

He was a retired Pentecostal minister, having accepted God’s call to preach the gospel soon after his return from serving in the United States Army during World War II.

He was a founding member of Mount Olive Free Will Holiness Church, which, after relocation, was renamed Cricket Ridge Pentecostal Free Will Baptist Church.

Mr. Davis was a retired heavy equipment operator with the state highway department in the Wayne County area.

He is survived by his wife of 73 years, Thelma Lee Davis of the home; a daughter, Cathy D. Langston of Mount Olive; two granddaughters, Kimberly Machamer and husband, Michael, of Mount Olive and April Langston and companion, Joseph Bryan Carter, of Dudley; three great-grandchildren, Blake Stroud, Ethan Machamer and Aden Carter; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Margaret Marie Davis; his parents, Leroy and Maggie Johnson Davis; a sister, Ora Lee D. Merritt; and six brothers, Henderson, George “Buck,” Roy “Dollie,” Arnold, Elbert and Adrian Davis.

Funeral services will be Monday, May 23, at 2 p.m. at Tyndall Funeral Home, with burial to follow in Maplewood Cemetery.

Visitation will be Sunday, May 22, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and at other times, at the Davis residence.
