WILLIAM A. MERRITT

William A. "Bill" Merritt Sr., 87, Goldsboro, passed away early Sunday morning at his home surrounded by his family.
Bill was born in Wayne County Sept. 30, 1928, to the late Norman Merritt and Gulie Braswell Merritt.
His wife of 63 years, Helen Neal Merritt, preceded in death April 12, 2016.
He was a member of Pine Forest United Methodist Church, and was active with the Methodist Men.
Bill operated Edwards Service Station for many years.
He served his country in the United States Army.
The family will receive friends Thursday, April 21, 2016, from 1 to 2 p.m. in the fellowship hall at Pine Forest United Methodist Church, followed by a service celebrating Bill's life at 2 p.m. in the sanctuary, with the Rev. Tom Hoogerland and the Rev. Larry Daniels officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery.
Bill is survived by his son, William A. "Bill" Merritt Jr. and wife, Sheryl, of Odessa, Fla.; daughters, Jeanee M. Wheeler of Rosewood and Seslie M. Roughton and husband, Kevin, of Nashville; grandchildren, Britttan W. Bibb and husband, Cameron, Morgan Wheeler, Jared Merritt and Kelsey Merritt and Peyton, Mallory, Carsyn and Addison Roughton; and great-grandchildren, Elliana Bibb and Elijah Bibb.
He is also survived by his sisters, Verna M. Scott and husband, Rodney, Frances M. Crumpler and husband, Billy, Elizabeth "Lib" Dudley and Sara Ann Sewell and husband, Charles, and brothers, Clifton Merritt and wife, Martha, Ray Merritt and Howard Merritt and wife, Dianne.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Martha Lynn.
Although flowers are welcome, the family requests memorials be made to Pine Forest United Methodist Church, 867 N.C. 581 South, Goldsboro, N.C., 27530.
