PRESTON DONNELL "P.D." WHITFIELD

Aug. 3, 1935-Feb. 17, 2016

Lifetime Duplin County resident Preston Donnell "P.D." Whitfield, retired farmer and employee of Duplin County Sheriff's Department, died Wednesday, Feb. 17, at the age of 80. Although enduring a lengthy illness, he passed suddenly at Wayne Memorial Hospital surrounded by family and friends.

He was born Aug. 3, 1935, the only child of the late Preston Franklin Whitfield and Ethel Nancy Jones.

He was married to Barbara Jean Wilson, who survives, along with their only child, David Wilson Whitfield.

He is also survived by two very special friends, Trent Gass and Brett A. Pearsall.

His final years were spent keeping up with current events via the Internet and visiting with friends.

A special thank you to his friend and doctor, Daniel Ricci, and Dr. I-Wen Chang and the staff of Southeastern Medical Oncology.

A memorial service will be held at Calypso Baptist Church, 132 E. Church Street, Calypso, Monday, Feb. 22, at 7 p.m.

Visitation will follow.

Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to the Duplin County Animal Shelter, 117 Middleton Cemetery Lane, Kenansville, N.C., 28349; St. Mary of the Angels Catholic Church, P.O. Box 1145, Mount Olive, N.C., 28365; or Southeastern Cancer Care Cures for the Colors, 203 Cox Blvd., Goldsboro, N.C., 27534.

The family is in the care of Howell Funeral Home and Crematory in Goldsboro.
