Edna Taylor Highsmith, 89, passed away peacefully Saturday morning, Jan. 30, 2016.

She was born Jan. 30, 1927, in Greene County, N.C., to Jesse and Myrtle Taylor.

Edna was a faithful member of Hickory Grove United Methodist Church for 44 years. She cherished her church, and enjoyed being part of the Epworth Sunday school class.

Mrs. Highsmith was a retired elementary school teacher.

She loved line dancing, bowling, gardening and most of all, time spent with her grandchildren.

Mrs. Highsmith is survived by her daughters, Mary (Bill) Magee and Jeanie (Chuck) Mauney; grandchildren, Paige (Aaron) Campbell, Patrick Mauney and Will Magee; sister, Delia Rose Price; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Along with her parents, her husband, James Edward Highsmith, preceded her in death.

A funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 4, 2016, at Hickory Grove United Methodist Church, 6401 Hickory Grove Road, Charlotte, N.C., 28215, with Dr. Samuel Moore Jr. officiating.

A visitation followed the service in the Family Life Center.

The graveside service was held at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 5, 2016, at Wayne Memorial Park in Dudley, N.C.

The family is very grateful for the many caregivers from Brookdale East -- Charlotte and Royal Park -- Matthews, who took special care of Mrs. Highsmith.

The family would also like to thank Celeste Featherstone, who cared for Mrs. Highsmith over the past year.
