ANNA D. PARKER

Anna Duke Parker, Goldsboro, passed away peacefully Friday, Aug. 21, 2015, at Wayne Memorial Hospital while surrounded by her family.

Anna was born in Goldsboro Jan. 20, 1924, to the late Oscar G. Duke and Irene Wade Duke.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by siblings, Katherine Cooper, Dorothy Willis, Rebecca Daniel, Bruce Duke and Ben Duke.

Before becoming a homemaker after the birth of her children, Anna was a staff reporter with the Goldsboro News-Argus, and subsequently secretary to the editor, Henry Belk.

In later years she served as a legal secretary in her surviving brother's law firm, Duke and Brown, until her retirement in 1990.

Anna's proudest achievement was her family, but she was also involved in a variety of community and church activities.

She was a past worthy grand matron of the Eastern Star and a reading volunteer at North Drive School.

She was the oldest member of First Baptist Church of Goldsboro, an honor now bestowed upon her husband. She also served as a youth leader, Sunday school teacher and deacon in her church, along with many other church ministries.

Her many interests included music, cooking and gardening.

She is survived by her loving husband of 68 years, Roy J. Parker Jr.; her son, Roy J. Parker III and wife, Barbara, of Goldsboro; and daughters, Linda Troy and husband, Eric, and Sandra Powell and husband, Al, both of Greensboro.

She is also survived by her brother, John Duke and wife, Angela, of Cary, formerly of Goldsboro.

Additionally, she is survived by grandchildren, Matilda Faircloth and husband, Will, John Parker IV and wife, Katherine, and James F. Harper II and fiancée, Melissa Stancill, all of Goldsboro, Jeffrey Alan Troy of Burlington, Matthew Thomas Troy of Winston-Salem and Alva Ray Powell III and wife, Leigh Ann, and William Andrew Powell and wife, Jesse, both of Greensboro.

Anna was proud of her 10 great-grandchildren, Ashton Powell, Parker Faircloth, Kaitlin Troy, Will Powell Jr., Henry Faircloth, Matilda Parker, Nathan Powell, Trace Harper, Elijah Powell and John Parker V.

She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Anna's life will be held Monday, Aug. 24, 2015, at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church in Goldsboro, with Dr. Glenn Phillips officiating.

A time of visitation will be held Sunday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the home of Roy and Barbara Parker, 1701 Evergreen Ave.

A private inurnment will be held prior to the service.

The family wishes to express its gratitude to the doctors and nurses of the third floor and ICU at Wayne Memorial Hospital for their kind and loving care.
