DR. BENJAMIN K. WARD JR.

Dr. Benjamin Kirby Ward Jr., 75, of Florence, S.C. died Saturday, Aug. 8, 2015, at Brookdale Berkeley Boulevard in Goldsboro after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer's.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 12, 2015, at Central United Methodist Church with burial following in Mount Hope Cemetery, directed by Waters-Powell Funeral Home. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Central United Methodist Church.

Dr. Ward was born in Goldsboro, N.C., the eldest son of the late Benjamin Kirby and Virginia Moore Ward. He graduated from Goldsboro High School and went on to earn his A.B. and M.D. degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. After serving two years in the U.S. Navy Medical Corps, Dr. Ward completed his medical internship in Miami and his residency at the University of Alabama-Birmingham. Dr. Ward practiced urology in private practice for 35 years after coming to Florence in 1974. He traveled to China, Africa and Eastern Europe on medical mission trips.

Dr. Ward was a member and past president of the Florence Rotary Club and was honored as Rotarian of the Year in 1999. He was an active and dedicated member of Central United Methodist Church and served as a fiery Sunday School teacher of the Sara Blanton Class. Dr. Ward also served as a Big Brother and supported local and overseas ministry and missions. He loved skiing, golf and travel and was a beloved Papa to his five grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his wife, Anne Starr Minton Ward, and parents. Dr. Ward is survived by his son, Pastor David (Angie) Ward of Indianapolis, In.; his daughter, Karen Ward (Jeff) Glenny of Atlanta, Ga.; his brother, Larry Ward of Norfolk, Va.; his sister, Debbie Ward (Rick) Hughes of Goldsboro, N.C.; five grandchildren, Montana Glenny, Olivia Starr Glenny, Ryan Glenny, Taylor Ward and Jamison Ward; and his sister-in-law, Kathryn (Wayne) Holliday of Blowing Rock, N.C.
