"Things look different on the way home from the party. I've been fortunate enough to have lived a very blessed life, full of both triumphs and tragedies.

"The glory of a win and the lessons of a loss are the measure of experience and wisdom. Wisdom comes from that experience.

"'The person who has had a bull by the tail once has learned 60 or 70 times as much as a person who hasn't.' -- Mark Twain

"I love my family deeply. My father had debilitating arthritis; he taught me how to both adapt and power through the pain. My mother instilled solid values and the true value of family. I was blessed with a beautiful wife, Mary Frances; two sons, Scott and Brent; a daughter-in-law that I adore, Belva; and three grandchildren -- Allison, Cullen and Russell, who are my greatest achievement. I don't have the words to describe the love and pride I have when I look at my family.

"After the loss of my Mary, I was blessed again with another fine woman, Anna Radford. 'My Anna' and I have shared many wonderful times together. Each of her children and grandchildren immediately made me feel like a welcome part of their family. I love each one dearly.

"I got to see my family rally around me during this tough situation, becoming stronger as a unit every day. They handled the adversity with grace and dignity. I love you all.

"I was never adverse to risk, I still love the taste of victory and cherish my life of adventures. I was fortunate enough to see my life's work in real estate development transition into the future. I worked all of my adult life for myself, my friends and my family. I had a lifetime full of wonderful friends, family and incredible experiences. I truly 'lived' everyday of my lifetime.

"As I look back, the memories and blessings are clear, the hard times are in the rearview mirror and I now look forward to what's next.

I'm a very fortunate, happy and fulfilled man to leave a lasting legacy of beautiful friends and family.

"'Live" every day -- if you have health, you have wealth -- the rest is just a game!

"Remember the good, learn from the bad, and don't worry about me -- I'm absolutely FANTASTIC and all is well."

As you would imagine, this obituary was written by Gene because of his love for life and his desire for you to know everything is good.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be given to Cures for the Colors, 203 Cox Blvd., Goldsboro, N.C., 27534.
