Joyce E. Stephens, 70, Goldsboro, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2015, in Fairbanks, Alaska.
She was born March 3, 1944, in Duplin County, N.C., to Helen Lenora Batts and the late Alex Swift.
She graduated from Rose Hill High School.
She worked for UniFirst and Wooten Music Co. for a number of years.
She is survived by her husband, Henry Stephens; seven children, Tonya Batts Nolley (Bobby) of Charlotte, N.C., Henry F. Lewis of Goldsboro, N.C., Reginald Lewis of Hartford, Conn., Shawn Lewis of Marietta, Ga., Corey F. Lewis (Tosha) of Goldsboro, N.C., Anthony Lewis of Goldsboro, N.C., and Latisha Lewis Davis (Charles) of Eielson Air Force Base, Alaska; 37 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; brothers, Ronnie and Osmond Swift; sister, Cynthia; sisters-in-law, Barbara Stackhouse, Patricia Thompson, Christine Nickies and Edna McGhee; special aunt and friend, Margaret "Boochie" Roberson; lifelong best friend, Sharon Caldwell (Robert) of Warsaw, N.C.; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and friends.
She was preceded in death by her stepfather, Wynzie Batts; aunts, Emma Chestnut and Cora Williams; and special aunt, Marie Swift.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Feb. 21, 2015, at noon at Central Heights Free Will Baptist Church, 302 Ervin Drive, Goldsboro. She will be laid to rest in Old Mill Cemetery, 3718 Central Heights Road, Goldsboro.
There will be a visitation Friday, Feb. 20, 2015, from 6 to 8 p.m. at J.B. Rhodes Funeral Home and Cremations, 1701 Wayne Memorial Drive, Goldsboro, with the family present to receive other family members and friends from 7 to 8 p.m. At other times, the family will receive friends at the home of Barbara Stackhouse, 823 S. Franklin St., Goldsboro.
