Jo Anne Benson Hill, 72, Dudley, died Thursday morning at Wayne Memorial Hospital.

Born in Lenoir County, she was the daughter of the late Norman and Doris Mercer Benson, and wife of the late Preston E. Hill.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Jan. 10, 2015, at 6 p.m. in the chapel of Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home, with Dr. Michael Coppock officiating.

The family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home.

Burial will be Sunday, Jan. 11, 2015, at 3 p.m. at Wayne Memorial Park.

Jo Anne is survived by two daughters, Beverly H. Harrell and husband, Jim, of Goldsboro and Renee H. Pratt and husband, Allan, of Fort Valley, Ga.; a sister, Brenda Joyce Howell and husband, Leland, of Goldsboro; four grandchildren, Lauren Harrell, Scott Harrell, Frankie Pratt and Joanna Pratt; and two great-grandchildren, Brayden and Caydence Kincaid.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Johnny Benson, and a grandson, Doug Harrell.

Jo Anne graduated from James Keenan High School, and played basketball during her time there.

She then graduated from the Wilson School of Nursing as a registered nurse.

She began her nursing career in the nursery at Wilson Memorial Hospital, then working with Cherry Hospital, retiring after more 30 years of service, and finally as an instructor at Wayne Community College in the Health Tech program.

She was a member of Brogden United Methodist Church, where she served on several committees, as a lay leader and went on several mission trips.

She was also a member of the Nurses Association and Southern Wayne Women's Club, and served as a Girl Scout leader.

Jo Anne was more than a nurse, she was a caregiver. She took exceptional care of her parents, in-laws, siblings, children and grandchildren over the years.

Jo Anne loved to read, was an avid Carolina fan and enjoyed going to the beach with her family. At the beach, she was always ready to take the boat and a book out to go fishing.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Doug's Able Hands or Brogden United Methodist Church.
