MARION D. SMITH
Died June 18, 2014
Marion Deleon Smith, 82, entered into heavenly life Wednesday, June 18, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center in Goldsboro, N.C. He was the son of the late Earl and Mildred Best Smith and was raised and educated in Wayne County, where he graduated from Central High School in 1950.
He served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War. After his discharge, he worked at Cherry Hospital and Security Storage Company, where he retired as operations manager after 49 years of service. In 1958, he joined St. Mark Church of Christ, where he became a member of the Usher Board. He served as "grill master" at the annual health fair. He also maintained membership in several fraternal organizations: Best Grove Lodge No. 392, where he was a Master Mason; the C.A. Whitehead Consistory No. 188 Commander-in-Chief; and Mizpah Temple No. 66, Past Potentate.
The visitation will be held today from 2 until 5 p.m. at the Haskins Funeral Home. A public viewing will be held at St. Mark, with family and friends present, today from 7-8:30 p.m. A service to celebrate his life will be held there on Monday, with Bishop Alton A. Smith officiating.
Interment will follow at Wayne Memorial Park, U.S. 117 Highway, Dudley. The family will receive friends at the home, 3607 Central Heights Road, Goldsboro.
Loving memories will be forever be cherished by his wife, Martha Smith; his son, Thomas (Rochelle) Smith; three daughters: Gwendolyn Gail Johnson and Sharon Wallace of Goldsboro, Patricia Smith of Morrisville; a stepson, Wendell (Theresa) Rodgers of Durham; nine grandchildren: Tomas Smith, Tiffany (Chris) Clark, Thomas Smith Jr., Tobias Smith, Patrick (Battista) Smith, Patrice Smith, Amber Wallace, Mahogany and Maressa Rodgers; nine great grandchildren; two brothers, Clarence Smith of Goldsboro and Earl (Lillian) Smith of Maryland; three sisters, Shirley Suggs and Melba (J.P.) Uzzell of Goldsboro and Doris Thompson of Maryland; nine nieces; four nephews; and a host of relatives and friends.
Haskins Funeral Home is serving the family.
