JOHN JERNIGAN
July 12, 1939-May 29, 2014
Hugh John "Tommy" Jernigan, 74, Goldsboro, was called home Thursday, May 29, 2014, to the loving arms of Jesus Christ his lord while surrounded by his family.
John was born in Wayne County July 12, 1939, to the late Raymond and Elma Westbrook Jernigan.
He retired from Textilease, and had worked with Chase Laundry at Cherry Hospital.
John was currently working with Jennings Transmission.
John was a longtime member of The First Pentecostal Holiness Church. He was devoted to his church, sang in the choir and was involved in many activities, where he utilized his gifts and abilities to share the love of God.
John was very proud to be a part of The First Church M-25 ministry and Gideons International.
Although John leaves a vacant place in our hearts, we know he truly earned his special place in heaven. John will always be remembered as a loyal man of faith, who showed love and respect to everyone who touched his life. The best of John will live on in each of us.
A service celebrating John's life will be held at 6 p.m. Saturday, May 31, 2014, at The First Pentecostal Holiness Church, with the Rev. Bill Rose and the Rev. John Howard officiating. Interment will be Sunday, June 1, 2014, at 2:30 p.m. in Wayne Memorial Park.
John is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Bett Jones Jernigan; his children, Jonna Katherine Jernigan Uljua and husband, Steve, and John Jarrod Jernigan; and granddaughters, Katherine Grace and Carrie Uljua.
He is also survived by his stepdaughters, Michelle Kearney and husband, Kevin, and Amy Jo Brock; stepgrandchildren, Brock, Nicholas and Anna Kearney; his brothers and sisters, David P. Jernigan, Kenneth Jernigan and wife, Karen, Ted Jernigan and wife, Karen, Billie Ingram, Phyllis Futrell and husband, Glenn, and Judy Jernigan; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his sister, Annie Jewel McCullen.
The family would like to express its appreciation for the compassionate care provided by Dr. James Atkins and the staff at SMOC, as well as the fourth-floor staff at Wayne Memorial Hospital. Love and heartfelt thanks are expressed to his special caregiver at Wayne Memorial Hospital, Clara.

The family will receive friends Saturday following the service in the narthex of the church, and other times at his home.
