James Addison Allen Jr., 87, Goldsboro, passed away Tuesday, May 27, 2014, at his home surrounded by his family.
James was born in Wayne County Dec. 1, 1926, to the late James Addison Allen Sr. and Cora Pierce Allen. He was married to the late Helen Rose Allen.
James retired as the assistant fire chief from the city of Goldsboro after 30 years of service with the Goldsboro Fire Department.
James also worked with Seymour Funeral Home for more than 30 years, where he assisted families and traveled across the United States to help the funeral home.
He proudly served his country in the United States Army during World War II.
James was a member of Spring Hill Free Will Baptist Church.
A service celebrating James' life will be held Thursday, May 29, 2014, at 7 p.m. in the chapel of Seymour Funeral Home, with the Rev. Lewis Forsythe and the Rev. Berry House officiating. Interment will be at 3 p.m. Friday, May 30, 2014, in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery with fireman honors.
James is survived by his daughters, Wanda Swaney and husband, Pete, of Goldsboro, Teressa Hoke and husband, Leonard, of Goldsboro and Treva Allen of the home; son, James Wilburn Allen and wife, Jenny, of Fremont; grandchildren, Nikki A. Kornegay and husband, Chance, of Winterville, Matthew Hoke of Durham and Angel S. Castleman and husband, Robert, of Deer Park, Texas; and great-grandchildren, Myka Swaney, Kristin Taylor, Casadi Taylor, Blake Swaney and Connor Swaney.
He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Katie R. Mitchell and family; nephew, Bayard Woodard and family; and his special friend and companion, Jean Collier and family.
In addition to his wife and parents, James was preceded in death by his sister, Margaret Woodard; brother, Thurman Allen; and grandson, Earl Swaney Jr.
The family would like to express its appreciation for the compassionate care provided by Dr. Carmack and Community Home Care and Hospice of Wayne County.
The family will receive friends Thursday following the service at Seymour Funeral Home, and other times at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Wanda and Pete Swaney, Charlie Braswell Road, Goldsboro.
