James Smith Jr., affectionately known by family and friends as "Brother" and "Bonecrusher," was born Dec. 10, 1969, in Goldsboro to the late James E. Smith "Buddy" and Eva Lee Smith. He was called to his eternal resting place Saturday, Sept. 28, 2013.

James graduated from Charles B. Aycock High School in 1988, where he was an outstanding member of the football and track team. He loved playing football, and earned the nickname "Bonecrusher" for his feats on the field.

His creativity and artistic talents were well known throughout the area, where he was often called upon to draw and paint people, places and things.

Cutting and designing hair were also special gifts that he possessed.

James loved the outdoors and working with his hands, and provided many services as a handyman, and he was always willing to help people in the community.

He was a caring, loving, kindhearted, easygoing and peaceful person. He enjoyed life and people, and never held a grudge.

An animal lover, he found great joy in taking care of his four dogs.

James leaves to cherish his memories his four sisters, Angeline and Charlene Johnson of the home, Bridget J. Cobb (Nazareth) of Goldsboro and Deliah Johnson of Pittsburgh, Pa.; a brother, Clifton Earl Johnson of Butner, N.C.; three aunts, Inez Smith Aldridge of Dudley, N.C., Louvenia Smith Coley (Ralph) of Goldsboro, N.C., and Katie Coley of Georgia; an uncle, Leonard Lewis of Dudley; and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.

A service of remembrance will be held Friday, Oct. 4, at 1 p.m. at Elm Grove Church Ministry in Pikeville, N.C., with apostle Jacqueline Ellis officiating.

Family visitation will be held from noon to 1 p.m. at the church prior to the service.

Entombment will follow at Old Mill Cemetery in Goldsboro.

Arrangements are by Community Funeral Home and Cremation Services at 401 N. William St., Goldsboro.
