PAUL BENJAMIN SHUTT

Paul Benjamin Shutt passed away July 22, 2011, at the age of 95.
He was born in Kossuth, Iowa, and proudly served in World War II as a master sergeant and B-29 crew chief.
Following the war, he returned to school, getting his degree in mechanical and civil engineering, and becoming certified as a professional engineer. He briefly worked for New Holland Machine Co. in New Holland, Pa., and then moved to St. Joseph, Mich., where he worked for Bendix until his retirement.
While working for Bendix, he invented and designed the dual assisted hydraulic brake system used in cars and trucks throughout the world.
Some of his favorite things to do were hunting, fishing and golfing.
He was widowed twice. He married Marguerite Stewart Shutt, and had a daughter, Mona. His second marriage was to Margaret Reason Shutt, after which he moved to Seaton, Ill.
He spent his winters in North Carolina with his daughter, and spent his summers on the farm in Seaton that he called Hidden Valley.
He looked forward to antelope hunting in Wyoming each fall.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Emerson Shutt and Mary Frances Friedemann Shutt; a sister, Wilda Achenbach; and two brothers, Kenny and Delbert.
He is survived by a brother Jim; a daughter, Mona McConnaughey; two grandsons, Ben and Kenny McConnaughey; two stepdaughters, Janet Johnston and Anita Chaffer; and two stepsons, Mike Searl and Bill Searl.
It was his wish not to have a traditional funeral, but to have a small graveside ceremony with immediate family.

Hurd-Hendricks Funeral Homes and Crematory is in charge of local arrangements.
