MOUNT OLIVE -- Mother Evangeline M. Kornegay, 90, lovingly known by her family and friends as "Mother Vangie," 211 W. Maple St., Mount Olive, N.C., departed this life Sunday, March 13, 2011, at her residence,
Evangeline was born May 24, 1920, to the late William Martin and Della Jackson Martin.
She was united in holy matrimony to the late Deacon Andrew E. Kornegay. From this union, nine children were born.
Many years ago, she dedicated her life to our Lord and savior, Jesus Christ, and became a member of Apostolic Holy Church.
Later she joined Northeast Free Will Baptist Church, where she remained a faithful member as long as her health permitted.
Mother Vangie was predeceased by her husband, deacon Andrew E. Kornegay; two sons, Andrew Kornegay Jr. and Jerome Kornegay; five brothers, Benjamin Franklin Martin, Sandy Alexander Martin, Walter Martin, Willie Martin and Leonard Martin; and five sisters, Louise Martin Hayes, Beatrice Rhodes, Ethel Eldridge, Roberta Martin and Lila Brown.
Funeral service will be conducted Saturday, March 19, 2011, at 11 a.m. at Northeast Chapel Free Will Baptist Church, 503 E. James St. extension, Mount Olive, N.C., with pastor Jesse Warren officiating. Interment will follow in Wayne Memorial Park Cemetery South, 2925 U.S. 117 South, Dudley, N.C.
A public viewing will be held Friday, March 18, 2011, at Northeast Chapel Free Will Baptist Church, 503 E. James St. extension, Mount Olive, N.C., from 5 to 7 p.m., with the family present from 6 to 7 p.m. to receive friends and other family members.
Mother Evangeline leaves to cherish her loving memories six daughters, Geraldine Edergton and husband, John, Mary Humphrey, Doris King and husband, Johnnie, Carolyn Posey and husband, Ray, Gayle Lee and husband, Howard, and Debra McLean and husband, Danny; a son, Alonzo Kornegay and wife, Terrie; a special granddaughter and caregiver, Zjhonae A. King; 31 grandchildren; 53 great-grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
