STANTONSBURG -- James Irwin Hill, 85, died Saturday at the home of his son in Stantonsburg, surrounded by his family.

Funeral services will be held Monday, Jan. 17, 2010, at 11 a.m. at the chapel of Seymour Funeral Home with the Rev. Greg Moser officiating. Burial will follow in Eureka Cemetery.

Irwin was born in Wayne County to the late Lantice and Mary Virginia Hill. He was married for 59 years to the late Minnie Smith Hill. Irwin was a member of Yelverton United Methodist Church and served his Lord actively for many years. He was a farmer in the Faro Community for many years and could often be found doing custom work for the area farmers. Along with his wife, they owned and operated Hill's Grocery Store in Faro.

Irwin is survived by his son, James Dennis Hill and wife, Peggy, of Stantonsburg; his daughters, Donna H. Cuthbertson and husband, Barry, of Belize, Central America, Terri H. Ervin of Maury; his grandchildren, Holly Lutze, Lisa West and husband, Bryan, T.J. Hill, Dennis Hill Jr., Stewart Ervin Jr. and wife, Lindsey, Justin Ervin and wife, Natalie, and Jeremy Ervin and wife, Shelley; and his great-grandchildren, Matthew Lutze, Colby Ervin, Brady Ervin, Reed Ervin and Marcy Anne West. He is also survived by his sisters, Virginia Cole, Mary Ann Holt, Brownie Dawson, Carol Mason and Shelby Bizzell; and his brother, C.R. Edmundson.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Lantice Hill Jr., McGee Hill, Donnie Hill, and Gary Hill; and his sister, Hammer Combs.

The family will receive friends today, Jan. 16, 2011, from 6 until 8 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home and other times at the home of his son, 744 Herman Lane Road, Stantonsburg.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Yelverton United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 67 Stantonsburg, NC 27833.
