Retired Marine Corps Master Sgt. Frederick Keith Harrell Jr., 72, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2010, at his home surrounded by his family.
Fred was born in Baltimore, Md., Aug. 3, 1938, to the late Frederick K. Harrell Sr. and Amelia Walker Harrell.
He served his country in the United States Marine Corps for 22 years, proudly serving as a Marine during the Vietnam War.
Following his military career, Fred began working with the Wake County Public Schools, and retired after 22 years of service.
Fred was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, 1000 N. Jefferson Ave., Goldsboro, with the Rev. Tom Norris, O.S.F.S., and chaplain Max Omana presiding. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery with full military honors.
Fred is survived by his wife of 38 years, Ginger P. Harrell; his daughters, Deborah H. Thomas and husband, Brad, of Asheboro and Catherine H. Taylor and husband, Lowell, of Goldsboro; his son, Gene L. Harrell and wife, Diana, of Dublin, Ohio; his grandchildren, Catie Thomas and Nathan Thomas of Asheboro, Christy Hill and David Hill of Greenville, Melissa Harrell of Georgia, Ashley Harrell of California and Andrew Harrell of Ohio; and a great-grandchild, Sarah Harrell.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Rusty Harrell.
Flowers are welcome or memorials may be made to the Fred Harrell Memorial Fund in care of any Bank of America.
A rosary service will be held Thursday at 6 p.m. in the chapel of Seymour Funeral Home, followed by a time of visitation from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
