JAMES DANIEL "J.D." LANCASTER
Died June 25, 2010
PINE LEVEL -- James Daniel "J. D." Lancaster, 90, Pine Level, passed away June 25, 2010, at E. Carlton Powell Hospice Center.
He was the son of the late Rev. W.H. and Lena Lancaster.
A veteran of the United States Navy serving in World War II. He was a survivor of the bombing of Pearl Harbor aboard the USS Arizona. He survived another attack aboard a landing tank ship while transporting troops from Guadalcanal to the island of Munda. He was the recipient of numerous awards, including the Purple Heart.
His coffin will be draped with an American flag that was flown over the USS Arizona Monument at Pearl Harbor, the resting place of his entombed shipmates.
He was a member of the VFW, American Legion, Loyal Order of the Moose and Lanwood Chapel Free Will Baptist Church.
He was always known for having a smile to share, a story to tell, fishing and his devotion to those he loved.
Services to celebrate the life of J. D. Lancaster will be conducted by the Rev. Almond Warrick Jr. and the Rev. Charles Petit at McLaurin at Pinecrest Funerals & Cremations Tuesday, June 29, 2010, at 11 a.m. Burial with military honors will follow at Pinecrest Memorial Park.
Visitation will be at McLaurin Monday, June 28, 2010, from 6 to 8 p.m.
Mr. Lancaster is survived by his wife and caregiver, Dorothy Lancaster; daughters, Carol Lancaster of Goldsboro, Beth Sitts and husband, Justin, of Pine Level and Danielle Lancaster of Selma; son, Jay Lancaster of Selma; granddaughters, Jenna and Katelyn; sister, Frances Phillips; brother, Louis Lancaster and wife, Ann all of Smithfield; stepdaughters, Louise Abbott, Betty Justice, Judy Massey and Jeanette Holland; and special friends, Dick Parker, Ray Ward and Judie Harrison.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Flossie Tolley, Nora Mae Coats and Ruth Warrick; and brothers, Horace Lancaster, Paul Lancaster, Thelbert "C.T." Lancaster and wife, Fern Lancaster.
