JUNE BYRD GRIMES

KINSTON -- June Byrd Grimes, 85, died Wednesday, May 26, 2010, at Lenoir Memorial Hospital.

She was born Jan. 10, 1925, in Calypso, N.C., to Minnie Reaves Byrd and Thomas Winfield Byrd.

Oct. 6, 1945, she was married to Rethel Wales Grimes of Smith Chapel community. They began their life together in Mount Olive and lived there for 21 years.

June was an active member of First Methodist Church, and served as church secretary for almost 20 years.

Soon after the family moved to Kinston in 1966, they joined Queen Street United Methodist Church. June served the church in many capacities, and she and Rethel were members of the Frank Mock Sunday school class.

She worked as administrative secretary to the director of food services at Caswell Center, and retired with 23 years of dedicated service.

June was a wonderful and loving wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, sister and friend, and will be greatly missed.

June is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 64 years, Rethel; a son, Douglas Wales Grimes and wife, Melodie, of Winston-Salem; a daughter, Jane Leigh Grimes Feather and husband, Cliff, of Cary; three grandchildren, Tyler Douglas Grimes and Thomas Winfield Grimes of Greenville and Sydney Elizabeth Grimes of Winston-Salem; and two sisters, Jean Winstead, her identical twin, of Cary and Bobbie Poole and husband, Robbie, also of Cary.

June is also survived by nieces and nephews, who were all very special to her.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by two sisters, Elizabeth Byrd and Sara Jane Kornegay.

There will be a private burial service at Westview Cemetery in Kinston.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 29, 2010, at Queen Street United Methodist Church, with a visitation following the service.

The family will gladly receive visitors in the home at all other times.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Queen Street United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 508, Kinston, N.C., 28502-0508.
