WARSAW -- Harvey Clayborn "H.C." Allen Jr., 86, died Sunday at home.

Services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Warsaw Baptist Church, 209 E. College St., Warsaw. Interment will be at Devotional Gardens in Warsaw.

A decorated World War II veteran, Allen was born Nov. 11, 1922. He served aboard the U.S.S. Elliot. His four-year service in the United States Marine Corps included duty in Guadalcanal, Guam and Okinawa.

H.C. Allen continued his military career with the North Carolina National Guard. Among his numerous Guard duties, he served as company commander of the Warsaw and Beulaville units, as battalion staff commander in Clinton and as an instructor at the Command and General Staff College. He retired as a lieutenant colonel in 1974.

Allen had been a Boy Scout since 1933. He served as a Tuscarora Council board member, Scoutmaster for Troop 20 and Explorer Scout adviser for many years. His Scouting awards included the Silver Beaver Award from the Boy Scouts of America, the Association of Baptists for Scouts of American Good Shepherd Award and the Daniel Carter Beard Masonic Scouter Award.

Service to his community was vital to Allen. He was a member of the Warsaw Junior Chamber of Commerce, past master and chaplain of Warsaw Masonic Lodge No. 677 A.F. & A.M. and past president of the Warsaw-Kenansville Rotary Club. Allen was a life member of both the American Legion Charles R. Gavin Post 127 and the Warsaw Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9810 and he served as chaplain. Allen was a member of the Warsaw Veterans Day Parade planning committee and was parade grand marshal in 1999.

He was a life member of Warsaw Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, Sunday school superintendent, Sunday school teacher, chancel choir member and men's choir member.

He was owner and operator of Service Electric Co. in Warsaw from 1949 until his retirement in 1997.

He is survived by his wife, Thelma Swinson Allen of Warsaw; his son, David Clayborn Allen of Warsaw; brother, Walter D. Allen and wife, Charlotte, of Clayton; sister-in-law Olivia Allen of Knoxville, Tenn.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, Harvey Clayborn Allen Sr. and Annie Lee Dixon Allen; a brother, Douglas B. Allen; his first wife, Jewell Porter Allen; and twin infants.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Warsaw Boy Scout Troop 20 or Warsaw Baptist Church.

Visitation will be at the home, 301 Dan Swinson Road, Warsaw, and following the Interment.

Community Funeral Home of Warsaw is handling the arrangements.
