WASHINGTON, N.C. -- Dr. Charles H. Byrd Sr., 70, 109 Mallard Creek Drive, died Tuesday at Beaufort County Medical Center.
A memorial service was held Thursday at 6:30 p.m. in the chapel of Hillside Funeral Service, with the Rev. Charles J. Schwidde officiating.
Dr. Byrd was born July 31, 1939, in Mount Olive to Luby Harper Sr. and Anne Geneva Gentry.
Charles was a graduate of Duke University, where he received his Ph.D. Dr. Byrd was the founding president of Beaufort County Community College and past president of Stanley County Community College in Albemarle. He was currently employed as the executive director of Pitt County Council on Aging.
On Feb. 3, 1970, Charles married Linda Woolard Byrd, who survives.
He is also survived by a son, Charles H. Byrd Jr. of Washington; one brother, Luby Harper Byrd Jr. of Mount Olive; one nephew, Craig Byrd and wife, Beth, of Goldsboro; one niece, Kelly Byrd of Mount Olive; and one brother-in-law, Roger Woolard of Washington.
