WILMINGTON -- William "Billy" Hosea Shepard Jr., 90, of Plantation Village, died May 28 at his home.

Private burial services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Onslow Memorial Park. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. at Emma Anderson Memorial Church in Topsail.

He was born Nov. 3, l9l8, in Wilmington and was the son of the late William Hosea and Hazel Winstead Shepard.

Billy graduated from Goldsboro High School in 1937 and made his home for 72 years in Goldsboro, where he was active in his church, the Salvation Army and Wayne Community College. He was branch manager of Statesville Flour Mills from 1939 to 1946, then with Goldsboro Milling Co. as a salesman and was named general manager in 1966.

Billy was president of North Carolina Feed Manufacture's Association, North Carolina Turkey Federation and National Turkey Federation. He received the North Carolina Poultry Federation Service Award in 1975 and was inducted in the North Carolina Poultry Hall of Fame in 1991 and the Wayne County Agriculture Hall of Fame in 1992.

He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Louise Woodard Shepard of the home; two daughters, Louise Gordon and husband, Jim, of Raleigh and Mary Sneeden and husband, Stan, of Wilmington; two sons, William H. Shepard III and wife, Debbie, of Ocala, Fla., and Jim R. Shepard and wife, Teresa, of Candor. He had 12 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
