SAMUEL LEVANDER MCLENDON

WADESBORO -- Samuel Levander McLendon, Major, U.S. Air Force Retired, 75, died Thursday, at Carolinas Medical Center Union in Monroe.
Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Monday at First Baptist Church, Wadesboro with Dr. Robert Hunter and Dr. Fred Senter officiating. Interment with masonic rites and full military honors will follow in Anson Memorial Park.
The family will greet friends today, from 5 until 7 p.m. at Leavitt Funeral Home and other times at the home.
Sam was born in Richmond County on Dec. 28, 1933, a son of the late Ernest Samuel and Bernice Faulkner McLendon. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Myrtle Cheek and Ruby Moore.
He was retired from the United States Air Force, having served more than 27 years. He had also worked as manager at Indian Hills Country Club in Tuscaloosa, Ala. and with Randall Publishing Company for 12 years.
Sam was a member of First Baptist Church, Wadesboro where he was a member of the Baraca Sunday School Class. He was also a member of Wadesboro Rotary Club, currently serving on the Wadesboro Town Council and was a 32nd Degree Mason and member of Kilwinning Masonic Lodge No. 64. He also had a great passion for restoring antique cars, especially Model A's.
Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Lois E. "Beth" Wailes McLendon of the home; his children, Dr. Lois Elaine McLendon Cansler and husband, Bob, of Raleigh, Samuel Howard McLendon of Rockingham, Michael Eugene McLendon and wife, Debbie, of Goldsboro and Joel Fredrick McLendon of Atlantic Beach; his grandchildren, Phillip Cansler and wife, Melissa, of Wake Forest, Lois Emily Cansler of Santa Monica, Calif., Chelsey Elizabeth Cansler of Boone, Shannon McLendon and David Scott McLendon, of Polkton, Christopher Barney McLendon of Wilmington and Sydnie Eileen McLendon of Jacksonville; six great-grandchildren, including Jason Robert Cansler of Wake Forest; his aunt, Christine Faulkner Williams of Wadesboro; and Bud the cat and Rosie the dog.
