EDNA G. JERNIGAN

Died Feb. 9, 2009

Edna Gray 'Mammy' Jernigan, 76, passed away Monday. Edna fought to the very end to overcome her courageous battle with scleroderma. She has brought so much joy into the lives of everyone who knew her. She is now an angel in heaven watching over her family and friends as she has done throughout her lifetime.

Edna was born in 1933 to Nathan and Annie Lou Johnson in Four Oaks. She attended Grantham High School and soon after married the love of her life, Robert Jernigan. They started their family with the birth of their first daughter, Mara, and a few years later their second daughter, Belinda. They moved to Ohio in 1956, where they started there working lives together. Edna was employed by Goodyear, where she worked for 30 years.

Upon retirement she and Robert moved back to North Carolina. She spent her days working in her yard, playing with her dog (Millie), craft activities, and socializing with her many friends and family. She attended Jordans Chapel Baptist Church weekly and helped with church activities.

Edna was preceded in death by her parents, Annie Lou and Nathan Johnson; husband, Robert Jernigan; and brother, Sherrill Johnson.

She is survived by her brother, Shelton Johnson (Janie); her two daughters, Mara (Gene) and Belinda (Carl); four grandchildren, Shawn, Cami (Chris), Shannon (Amber), and Kerry (Jill); and four great-grandchildren, Jacob, Lane, Nicholas, and Tripp.

The funeral service will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Jordans Chapel Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
