Willie "Bill" Matthews Jr., 76, passed away peacefully on Nov. 28, 2008, at Britthaven of Goldsboro.

Graveside services will be held on Monday, Dec. 1, 2008, at 1 p.m. at the Baldwin Cemetery, Powell Road, located in the Elroy Community, Goldsboro, with Brother Adgie O'Bryant officiating.

A viewing of the late Mr. Matthews will be held on Sunday, Nov. 30, 2008, at Lightner Memorial Funeral Home, 601 East Ash St., Goldsboro, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Mr. Matthews was born on April 13, 1932, to the late Willie and Maggie Greenfield Matthews. He was the husband of Mrs. Annie Mae Matthews, also of Britthaven. He grew up in the Elroy Community and attended Central High School. He worked many years as a farmer and was later employed with J.W. Grant Trucking Company as a mechanic. He was a jack-of-all-trades and handyman. He could fix and repair almost anything and was always willing to help someone.

He was formerly married to Shirley Best Perry, and this union produced two sons. He leaves to cherish the memory of his life his wife, Annie Mae Matthews; two sons, Winfred Gerald and Marichal Matthews, both of Goldsboro; a stepdaughter, Denise Nicholas of Goldsboro; two stepsons, Ralph Mumford and James Flowers Jr., both of Goldsboro; three sisters, Vanzelee Ashford of West Melbourne, Fla., Elnora Vinson and Edna Battle, both of Goldsboro; his twin brother and wife, Willard and Doris Matthews of Goldsboro; two grandchildren; six stepgrandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren; and a host of devoted nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

Friends and family will be received at 433 and 455 Millers Chapel Road, Elroy Community. The family will assemble at the home of Mr. Matthews in preparation for the funeral cortege, which will escort him to his final resting place. Services of compassion and comfort are rendered to the family by Colvin Funeral Home of Lumberton, N.C.
