LaGRANGE -- William H. "Joe" Batten, 84, of 2476 N. Beston Road, passed away Thursday night at Wayne Memo-rial Hospital.

Graveside funeral services will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. at the Pikeville Cemetery with the Rev. Jim Williams officiating.

Born in Wayne County, he was the son of the late Charles A. "Sam" and Martha Barfield Batten. A member of Bethel United Methodist Church in LaGrange, he was retired from civil service at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base after 23 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served during World War II.

Mr. Batten is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mary Batten; one daughter, Mary Jo Brock of LaGrange; one son, Sammy Batten of Fayetteville; one sister, Essie Spencer of Ayden; two grandchildren, Joel Batten of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Matthew Brock of LaGrange; and his beloved dog, "Prince."

Family members will greet friends after the graveside service at the home, 2476 N. Beston Road, LaGrange.

The family requests that memorial gifts be made to the Bethel United Methodist Church Building Fund, c/o Jackie Overbee, 1882 Hood Swamp Road, LaGrange, N.C. 28551.
