OSCAR M. HERRING

WARSAW -- Oscar Melvin Herring 83, of West Wards Bridge Road, Warsaw, died Wednesday at Sampson Regional Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Unity United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Pinecrest Cemetery. Visitation will be held tonight from 7 until 9 at Community Funeral Home of Warsaw.

Mr. Herring was born Jan. 10, 1925 in Duplin County to the late Walter L. and Ora Davis Herring. Mr. Herring was a founding and life-long member of Unity United Methodist Church. He took a public job in later life but farming was the one thing that was near and dear to his heart.

Mr. Herring is survived by his wife, Wilma Martin Herring of the home; sons Mel Herring of Durham and Danny Herring and wife, Bunnie, of Kenansville; daughter, Sandra H. Bettenhausen and husband, Doug, of Raleigh; brother, Alfred Herring and wife, Virginia, of Clinton; sisters, Olive Matthis of Warsaw, Doris Whitman of Fayetteville and Stella Kyzer of Columbia, S.C.; sister-in-law, Swannie Herring of Warsaw; grandchildren Danna Westerbeek and husband, Kraig, Toni Devane and husband, Clay, Jonathan and Allison Bettenhausen, and Heather Catlin and husband, Brian; great-grandchildren, Kyndall, Kari, Kelli and Karsyn Westerbeek, Cate Devane and Kalle Catlin.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Walter Herring Jr.; and a sister, Janice Howard.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Unity United Methodist Church, c/o Donna Westerbeek-Tresurer, 1635 W. Wards Bridge Road, Warsaw, N.C., 28398.

Arrangements are being handled by Community Funeral Home of Warsaw.
