MOUNT OLIVE -- Gideon Ray Walker Sr., 81, of 654 Northeast Church Road, died Thursday afternoon at SunBridge Care Center in Mount Olive.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday at 6 p.m. at Tyndall Funeral Home in Mount Olive and will be officiated by the Rev. Sherman Dilley, with visitation immediately following the service. Committal and interment will be on Monday at 11 a.m. at Wayne Memorial Park.

Family and friends are welcome to the residence at times other than the visitation.

He was a member of the Northeast Original Free Will Baptist Church, where he was a former deacon and was a member of its men's fellowship. He was a farmer and was a rural mail carrier for the Mount Olive Post Office.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Geneva Barwick Walker of the home; a son, Ray Walker Jr., of Mount Olive; a daughter, Janet Walker, of Mount Olive; a son-in-law, James Sauls, of Goldsboro; seven grandchildren, Jay Sauls and Daniel Sauls, both of Goldsboro, Ashton Eakes of Raleigh, Devon Eakes, Ali Eakes, Allen Walker, and Drew Walker, all of Mount Olive; two brothers, Edgar Lee "Buddy" Walker, of Surf City and Donald Walker, of Wilson, along with their families; and two sisters-in-law, Eula B. Malpass, of Mount Olive, and Viola B. Grantham, of Grantham.

Mr. Walker was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda Walker Sauls; his parents, Gideon Claude Walker and Ethel Burch Walker; a sister, Sallie Walker Overman; and two brothers, Lawrence Walker and C. H. "Shorty" Walker.

Flowers are welcome or memorial gifts may be made to Kitty Askins Hospice Center, P.O. Box 88, Goldsboro, N.C., 27534.

The Walker family wishes to express their gratitude to Dr. Hervy Kornegay Sr., the SunBridge staff, and also the 3HC staff for their untiring support and splendid care they gave to their loved ones. Also, a special thanks is extended to their many kind friends and neighbors for all acts of kindness.

Arrangements are being handled by Tyndall Funeral Home of Mount Olive.
