DURHAM -- Mr. Harold Lee Batiste Sr. was born in Goldsboro on March 13, 1945, to Hannah Batiste and the late George Batiste Sr. He departed this life on Nov. 5, 2008, at Duke University Medical Center in Durham.

Harold graduated from Dillard Senior High School in Goldsboro. In 1967, he earned a B.S. degree from Kentucky State University. After serving his country for two years in the United States Army, he acquired a Masters Degree in Education from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

His hobbies included traveling, basketball and all other forms of competitive games. Above all else, he enjoyed the 40 wonderful years of marriage to his beloved Faye.

Harold was affiliated with many businesses and social organizations including St. Joseph's African Methodist Episcopal Church and Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.

Harold leaves to cherish his memories: his wife, Faye; two sons, Harold Jr. and wife, Vernita, of Huntersville and Derris of Durham; two granddaughters, Vandrece and Victoria; his mother, Mrs. Hannah Batiste of Goldsboro; two brothers, George Batiste Jr. and wife, Toya, of Eureka, Calif., and John Batiste of Goldsboro; two sisters, Lois Lewis and husband, Leroy, of Clayton and Sheila Batiste of Sag Harbor, N.Y.; one aunt, Mrs. Essie Smith of Chattanooga, Tenn.; seven sisters-in-law; five brothers-in-law; a host of nieces and nephews who absolutely adored him; and many other relatives and special friends.
