PLUMA S. SULLIVAN

PIKEVILLE -- Pluma Stancil Sullivan, 90, passed peacefully on Saturday at Avante in Wilson, N.C.
The funeral will be held Monday at 5 p.m. at Stoney Creek Free Will Baptist Church, 752 Stoney Creek Church Road, Goldsboro, with the Revs. Gary Bailey, Barry Williams and Dr. De Wayne Eakes officiating. The family will have a time of visiting and sharing following the service in the Fellowship Hall.
"Miss Pluma" or "Granny," as she was affectionately called by many, was born in the Glendale Community of Johnston County. The daughter of Alvin R. and Esther Peedin Stancil, she was married to Clement B. Sullivan who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her siblings Vernard A. Stancil and Beulah Stancil Mercer.
She leaves her daughter, Carolyn S. Eakes and husband, De Wayne Eakes, of Lucama N.C.; a grandson, Kevin Wayne Eakes of Charleston, S.C.; brothers Glenn Stancil and Donnell "Lou" Stancil; and a sister, Virginia Stancil Fulghum, all of Kenly, N.C.
Miss Pluma was active
in the Center Ridge Presbyterian Church until her marriage when she and her husband moved to the Pikeville Community. At that time, she moved her membership to Stoney Creek Free Will Baptist Church and began a life of service both in her church and her profession.
She taught Sunday School for over 45 years, served three terms as president of the local Women's Auxiliary, and acted as youth director for a number of years. She served as president of the Western Conference Women's Auxiliary and was a gifted speaker, frequently invited to teach study courses throughout Eastern North Carolina and to provide lay messages on special Sundays. Her messages were laced with wit and wisdom from years of experience.
For more than 10 years, she volunteered at Cragmont Assembly in Black Mountain, a Free Will Baptist retreat where she prepared three meals per day for 150 campers.
As a professional dietitian for Wayne County Schools, she worked at Pikeville and Norwayne Schools. Here again, she was an active participant in the School Food Service Association, serving as local president, district director, and on the State Executive Board and the State Nominating Committee. After 30 years in food service, she retired only to become a weekly volunteer for the American Red Cross at Wayne Memorial Hospital and Red Cross Blood Mobile program in Wilson. Wherever she went, Miss Pluma served others and left every situation better than she found it. She was truly a role model, a lady of humble distinction, devoted to her church, her family and friends. Her life was exemplified by her philosophy, "I always want to be ready when someone needs me. I love people and being with them. I live alone, but I'm not alone." Her personality was one of humility and graciousness that touched many lives.
