JIMMY W. ANDERSON

SWANSBORO -- Our Hero, Jimmy Woodard Anderson, 63, passed away on Sept. 11, 2008, Hero's Day, at Carteret General Hospital in Morehead City surrounded by his family.
A service to celebrate Jimmy's life will be held Sunday at 6 p.m. in the chapel of Seymour Funeral Home. Interment will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Wayne Memorial Park with full military honors. The Rev. Bill Rose and Bill Garner will officiate.
Jimmy was born in Wayne County on April 29, 1945, to the late Woodard Anderson and Martha Strickland Anderson. He retired as a First Sgt. from the United States Army having served two tours during the Vietnam War. While serving his country with honor, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, 6th AWD, the Non-Commissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon with one DEV, the Army Service Ribbon, the Army Commendation Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, the Bronze Star Medal, the Overseas Service Ribbon, 1st AWD, the Drill Sergeant Identification Badge, the Air Medal, the Army Achievement Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster, the Vietnam Service Medal with four Bronze Service Stars, the Vietnam Campaign Medal with 60 DVC, the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, the Combat Infantryman Badge, and the Army Achievement Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters.
After retiring from the Army, Jimmy had worked with Banker Systems of America and most recently with Ragsdale Car Dealership.
Jimmy is survived by his wife, Karon Garris Anderson; his daughters, Michelle Dial, Melissa Shackelford and husband, Jonathan, and Debbie Mitchum and husband Sonny; his brother, Billy Anderson and wife, Susie; his stepsons, Burney Shirley and wife, Maile, and William B. Shirley; his grandchildren, Hunter Edmundson, Kaden Shirley and Addie Shirley; and several nieces and nephews including, Bill Anderson and wife, Jeane, Marti Jones and husband, Stevie, Daniel Smith and wife, Amanda, and Amy Gambill and husband, Philip.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his half-brother, Howard L. Sasser.

The family will receive friends Sunday following the service and other times at the home of Billy and Susie Anderson, 164B Old Kenly Road, Pikeville, N.C.
