ALBERTSON -- Ethel Belle Kornegay Trotter, passed away on Saturday.
Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. today at Tyndall Funeral Home in Mount Olive, with the Rev. J. Elwood Oliver officiating. Visitation will follow the service. The committal and interment will be at 10 a.m. on Tuesday at Oak Ridge Memorial Park, Pink Hill.
She was the head of the engineering and drafting department for the city of Kinston, where she was awarded Employee of the Year in 1995. Instrumental in winning Kinston the designation of "All American City" in 1998 and bringing about the Kinston Global Transpark, she was integral in the design and development of the Neuse River Nature Center, the Kinston Farmer's Market Pavilion, the City Council Chambers, the Kinston handicapped accessible All American Playground, and the design of the Great Seal of the City of Kinston.
She was born in Jones County on Nov. 18, 1922, to Herbert Talmadge Kornegay of Duplin County and Mary Ethel Moore Kornegay of Jones County. She was active in theater at B.F. Grady High School and at Mars Hill College. She was one of the first women accepted to Wake Forest College, and later she studied at the Baltimore School of Engineering and Drafting, where she was part of the team that designed the B-52 bomber. She was a civilian draftsman for Seymour-Johnson Air Force Base, where she designed the first military housing.
Mrs. Trotter attended Alum Springs Baptist Church. She had also been a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution as well as The Colonial Dames.
Mrs. Trotter was preceded in death by her daughter, Mary Theresa Trotter in 1993, and by her husband of 53 years, James V. Trotter in 1997. She is survived by two daughters, Deborah Trotter Holbrook and her husband, Tom, of Athens, Ala., Dr. Alicia C. Trotter and her husband, Dr. Robert Mark Simpson, of Travilah, Md.; as well as three grandchildren, Haley Simpson of Albertson, Eleanor Simpson and William Simpson, both of Travilah, Md.
Also surviving are three sisters, Virginia K. Abernethy and Ila Marie K. Harper, both of Mount Olive, and Denise K. Ward of Apex, and their families.
