GRACE H. SPENCER

Jan. 10, 1924-July 28, 2008

Grace Huffman Spencer, 84, a resident of Kirkwood Retirement Village, passed away on Monday at Kitty Askins Hospice Center surrounded by her family.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at First Free Will Baptist Church with the Rev. John Hill officiating. The family will greet friends following the service in the church parlor. Graveside services will follow at 3 p.m. in Elm City Cemetery, Elm City.

Grace was born in Wayne County on Jan. 10, 1924, to the late Edward Ward Huffman and Lila Bowden Huffman. She was a member of Freedom Baptist Church in Chesapeake, Va., and was currently attending First Free Will Baptist Church in Goldsboro. Grace was a life member of the Albert Schiffer Ladies Auxiliary Veteran of Foreign Wars No. 2335 in Mecosta, Mich. She had served as the treasurer for many years and for three years as president of the auxiliary. For three years, Grace was also a member of the 12th district Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary.

Grace is survived by her daughters, Faye T. Bartlett and husband, John of La-Grange and Lila T. McCoy of Virginia Beach, Va.; her son, Warren Douglas Thornton and wife, Nancy of Rodney, Mich.; her sisters, Ruby Attaway of Norfolk, Va., Girtle Lee Willoughby of Dudley and Frances Anderson of Garner; 12 grandchildren, L.T. McCoy III, Sonya Beuerle, Floyd Copeland III, Keilani Cope-land Kibby, Tanya Bartlett Grady, Franklin Bartlett, Carol Thornton Titus, Warren Thornton Jr., Daniel Thorn-ton, Kristina Thornton Casey, Harry McCoy and Daryl McCoy; and 22 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Warren Hudson Thornton; a daughter, Peggie Copeland; a son-in-law, Larry McCoy Jr.; a sister, Jean Lynch; and two brothers, Russell Huffman and Cecil Huffman.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Kitty Askins Hospice Center, 2402 Wayne Memorial Drive, Goldsboro, N.C., 27534 or the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary.

Arrangements are being handled by Seymour Funeral Home and Cremation Service.
