STATESVILLE -- Jeffrey David Cox, 47, died on Saturday.

A memorial Mass will be conducted 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 16 at St. Philip the Apostle Catholic Church with the Rev. Father Kurt Fohn officiating. The family will receive friends on Wednesday from noon to 1 p.m. before the service.

Born on January 21, 1961, in Nashville, Tenn, he was the son of Robert W. Cox of Ocean Isle Beach, N.C., and the late Dorothy Henry Cox.

Mr. Cox was a 1979 graduate of Sanderson High School in Raleigh, and received his bachelor's degree in business administration in 1984 from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro where he met his future bride, Lilia Rafols.

Mr. Cox worked in the building supply industry for 25 years in purchasing and sales, and was a corporate vice president for Goldsboro Builders Supply. He was a member of the Council for Entrepreneurs.

Having begun his association with Scouts as a youth in Raleigh, Mr. Cox was a Scout leader in Goldsboro since 1992 and continued as a Scout leader for Troop 348 of the Piedmont Council of BSA from 1998 to 2003. He was a founding member of the Knights of Columbus in Shallotte in 1984 and continued his membership in Goldsboro, Charleston and Statesville.

He was a member of St. Phillips the Apostle Catholic Church, where he also volunteered as a Sunday school teacher. Mr. Cox's civic service included membership in the Kiwanis Club in Goldsboro for eight years, as well as participation in the March of Dimes and Kidney Foundation fundraisers, Relay for Life, the Hunger Walk for Yokefellow and Operation Lamb.

Mr. Cox was an avid supporter of his children's activities and over the years devoted much time as a coach for soccer, basketball, baseball and softball. He was a loyal Statesville High Greyhound fan supporting his wife's and children's alma mater.

He is survived by his wife, Lilia Rafols Cox; children, Christopher Matthew and Sydney Maria Cox; father, Robert W. Cox of Ocean Isle Beach, N.C., and father's wife, Nancy Leopard Cox; brother Brian James Cox of Orlando, Fla.; and sister, Kathleen Cox Trimble of Durham. Also surviving are five nephews, Bobby Trimble, Stephen Cox, Nicholas Ruiz, Andrew Ruiz and Raphael Ruiz; and three nieces, Brooke Trimble, Catie Trimble and Lauren Cox.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, 7272 Greenville Ave., Dallas, TX 75231 or to the Boy Scouts of America Piedmont Council, P.O. Box 1059, 1222 East Franklin Blvd., Gastonia, N.C., 28053.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by Nicholson Funeral Home.
